Operating winter stadiums is among the most energy-intensive sectors in sports infrastructure. At a time of fluctuating energy prices and increasing pressure on ecology, managers are looking for ways to maintain operations without the need for drastic increases in admission fees or limiting public hours. The key to this goal is the innovative HIPPOTRON® ICE technology, which was successfully deployed at the Piešťany Winter Stadium during the 2025/2026 season.
The first and most visible benefit after the system's installation is a radical change in the properties of the ice surface. According to a reference report prepared by Ing. Ľuboš Lazový, the surface after the deployment of HIPPOTRON® ICE technology is more uniform, harder, and shows a much lower tendency for imperfections to form.
These qualities are appreciated not only by professional hockey players, for whom ice quality is crucial, but also by the general public, who enjoy a safer and smoother surface.
The technology works on the principle of water treatment, which subsequently creates a different crystalline structure during freezing. As a result, the ice is more compact. Interesting proof of its functionality was experienced in Piešťany when, during a temporary uninstallation of the system, the ice quality and operating parameters immediately dropped to their original levels. This clearly confirms the technology's direct influence on ice quality.
From a stadium manager's perspective, the most important parameters are savings. The HIPPOTRON® ICE system brought concrete and measurable data to Piešťany:
Reduction in Water Consumption: There was a decrease of approximately 10%, representing not only financial savings but also a significant ecological benefit.Cooling Optimization: Before deploying the technology, it was necessary to cool the surface to -8°C. With the HIPPOTRON® ICE system, cooling to -5.5°C is sufficient while maintaining superior ice properties.
Energy Efficiency: Reducing cooling requirements by 2.5 degrees means a drastic reduction in electricity bills, as the compressors do not have to work under such a high load.
Given that the energy requirements of the device itself are minimal, the overall operational efficiency of the stadium significantly increased after installation.
A common concern when introducing new technologies is the need for structural modifications and long operational downtimes. However, HIPPOTRON® ICE stands out for its simplicity in this regard. Installation does not require any major construction interventions in the stadium's existing infrastructure. In Piešťany, the deployment went smoothly, and no significant technical problems have been recorded during operation so far.
The reference report from January 19, 2026, evaluates HIPPOTRON® ICE as an innovative solution that helps reduce the environmental impact of operations. In today’s world, where sustainability is a key topic, such investments are becoming a necessity for every modern sports facility.
As experience from Slovakia confirms, investing in ice quality pays off not only in the form of satisfied hockey players but, above all, in the form of provable operational savings. Victory, as we know, is born not only on the ice but also in the smart management of the foundation for the future.
