Chur became the first city in Switzerland where this system was put into full operation. The project attracted the attention not only of experts in the field of cooling and sports facilities, but also of the ice makers themselves, who began working with the new system on a daily basis.
During our visit to the stadium, we had the opportunity to observe the technology in action and ask those who use it most often. We were interested in how the innovation had proven itself in practice and what their first impressions were. We therefore approached one of the ice makers who has been working with HIPPOTRON® ICE since day one.
What was your first impression when you learned that the new HIPPOTRON® ICE technology would be tested at your facility?
We were skeptical at first, but we definitely wanted to try it out. The evening after installation, we removed about 5-7 mm of old ice and created a new surface. Already during the first application of water, we noticed that something had changed – the water applied to the ice behaved differently than usual. The water froze faster.
How has your daily work with ice changed since installing the HIPPOTRON® ICE system? Is maintenance easier?
Definitely yes. The fact that the ice is harder and more durable has made our work much easier. Even after extremely demanding A-team training sessions, we can completely restore the ice within 15 minutes. Previously, this was completely impossible.
One of the main benefits of the HIPPOTRON® ICE system is a harder and more even ice surface. Have you noticed this difference in practice?
Yes, and it's incredible. Activated water freezes faster and more compactly, creating a very smooth, even, and extremely fast surface. You have to experience it for yourself—it's hard to describe in words.
How did the players and coaches react to the new ice quality? Did you get any feedback?
The reactions were mostly enthusiastic. Many were surprised at how fast and smooth the ice is. Some couldn't believe there could be such a difference. Thanks to the new ice quality, skating is much smoother – you hardly feel any resistance and after a short sprint you glide significantly longer.
Was it technically challenging to integrate the system into the existing stadium infrastructure? Did you have to undergo special training?
No, the system is very easy to use. However, we recommend that the installation be carried out by a professional plumber. Otherwise, the controls are completely intuitive and can be mastered by anyone with experience in ice maintenance.
What surprised or excited you most about this system?
Definitely the way the water freezes. It's fascinating to watch how smooth the surface becomes – just working with the ice resurfacer after applying the water in the evening is always a pleasure. What's more, the system also delivers significant energy savings. We have better ice and save money at the same time. It's a combination that really makes sense.
Would you recommend the introduction of the HIPPOTRON® ICE system in other Swiss ice rinks?
Definitely yes. Although each rink is unique, I have seen identical results in other places. I have no doubt that HIPPOTRON® ICE represents the future of ice resurfacing.
